Chuck, General Manager of a premier mail house, likes to make his customers comfortable that they are targeting the right areas. “We are constantly getting clients who would like to mail several thousand pieces, and need help determining where to mail to,” says Chuck. “Given the smaller nature of these mailings, clients feel they need to really target specific neighborhoods, not whole ZIP Codes. For example, a client who came in just today looking to mail to both sides of a given street and that’s it.”
Chuck knew that neighborhoods often follow postal carrier routes and that saturating mailings by carrier provides the best postage rates for his clients. “But we needed a map to show where the ideal carrier routes are,” added Chuck. “So we contacted Maponics.”
Typically, since Chuck’s company serves a large local area, the staff at Maponics recommended they purchase county level carrier route maps. This initial purchase could be used with virtually all of the clients they serve. County level carrier route maps are generally 4’ x 6’ digital PDFs, showing all ZIP Code and carrier route boundaries labeled, as well as all local streets and highways. Because of the vast amount of data being represented on these maps, street labeling is between 40-60%, although the highways are always labeled. According to Chuck, “These large maps are a great value but sometimes we need more detail on a local level.”
Since a particular client wanted to see the maximum detail to target by, more street detail was required. Chuck decided to purchase individual ZIP Code/carrier route level maps for each individual high-density ZIP Code in their county. This purchase allowed them to receive both an 8.5” x 11” and a 17” x 22” digital map for each of these ZIP Codes, maximizing the number of streets labeled. “Actually”, Chuck states ”we usually print the 17” x 22” in 11”x17” format, and clients are able to take them home, along with a list of resident occupant counts for each carrier route. Using these tools, the client then decides how many and which carrier routes to mail to in order to meet their mailing objectives.”
“We have used other mapping services before,” Chuck explains, “but they were too expensive and the data was inaccurate! We will definitely use Maponics again. Especially to receive updates, as carrier route data tends to change fairly frequently.”
