According to the USPS, 10% of carrier routes are added, dropped or change shape every month.

These change statistics often go underreported, because most marketing agencies can only detect when a carrier route has been dropped or added – not when the carrier route delivery area has been adjusted.

Using new mapping technology, we can now tell you what percent of the carrier routes in the counties you care about have been added, dropped or changed shape in the last month or last year.

Finally, a quantifiable way to determine how accurate your existing map is and whether or not it’s time for an update.

We have highlighted below the change statistics for ten of the most frequently ordered counties. Also below, get an up-close look at the types of changes that occur to carrier routes over time by looking at two maps of the same area, one current and one a year old.

The change statistics shown above have been calculated be taking the total number of carrier routes in a county now and determining what percent of those are new or have changed shape within the period specified. We also account for those that have been deleted. For example, Maricopa County, Arizona started with 2827 carrier routes. Over a month 22 new ones were added, 3 old ones were deleted, 322 kept their original number but changed coverage area, and 12 covered the same area as a month before but were given new numbers. This adds up to 359 adds, deletes and changes which when divided by the original starting number of 2827, means the county’s carrier routes changed 12.6%.

SAMPLES – CARRIER ROUTE MAPS CHANGE OVER TIME

The above sample shows a portion of a county a year ago. Below, the area is shown a year later. It is apparent that 2 ZIP Codes (denoted by the green boundary lines) have changed coverage areas, and carrier routes never cross ZIP codes. Also, several of the carrier routes that existed a year ago have been absorbed by other routes, so that the overall number of routes has decreased.
