Why Do Some Companies Use Old Data for Their Maps?

The answer is simple:  it’s cheaper for the map provider to use old data.  While no map database is perfect, Maponics has chosen to invest in the most current nationwide data available so that your map is as accurate as possible.

Why Do Some Companies Use TIGER Streets for Their Maps?

TIGER is a mapping database produced by the US Census Bureau and it has been improving each year of its release.  Historically, the Census Bureau has produced a major upgrade every 3 or 4 years, with incremental updates every two years.  Their main purpose has been to facilitate the actual census taken every 10 years.

TIGER data is free and commercial data is expensive. It’s much easier for other mapping companies to bring in the free TIGER data every two years than to incorporate updates each quarter through a commercial data source.

In contrast, there are map data compilers who update and release their data every quarter, and they take special care to make the street work more accurate by improving the alignment of the roads with the real world, increasing the addition of new roads and housing developments, reclassifying roads so that the highways look appealing and reflect reality.   Of course, they can’t capture every change in every corner of the country overnight, but experience show time after time that their accuracy far exceeds that of the TIGER database.
