Area Codes – also known as Numbering Plan Area (NPA)
An NPA is referred to as an area code. In some areas (big cities), area codes overlay each other substantially (known
as an overlay complex). A single polygon represents these areas served by more than one area code. Maponics provides two different area code shapefiles: one representing overlay NPAs and one where an attempt has
been made to carve out distinct polygons per area code.
Rate Center
The specific geographic area associated with one or more NPA/NXX codes (the first 6 digits of any phone number) that
have been assigned to a local exchange carrier. The local exchange carriers use this area to set rate boundaries for billing. Some people refer
to these as “exchange boundaries” and “wire center boundaries”. These terms are, for the most part, synonymous with rate center areas.
LATA
LATA (local access and transport area) is the geographic area covered by one or more local telephone companies. The current rules for permitting a company to provide services are based on the
Telecommunications Act of 1996 and the areas are established in accordance with the Modification of Final Judgment (MFJ).
Wire Center
This term is often used interchangeably with “central office”. The wire center is the location where the local phone company houses its main equipment for providing services.
