When buying a home, many people choose properties based on the quality of local public schools, particularly high schools. But homes that are served by high-performing schools are often more expensive than similar homes with lower ranked schools, making them out of reach for some families. In fact, a Brookings Institution report found that in some cities, it’s more affordable to enroll your child in private school than to pay for housing in a school attendance zone with a high-scoring public school. To help home buyers find affordable homes with high-quality public schools, we compiled a list of the Top 10 neighborhoods in the largest U.S. metro regions that are serviced by well-ranked public high schools and also contain affordable real estate and very low to moderate crime levels. Affordability is based in part on Realtor.com's affordability calculator. (Read more about our methodology.)
