Software Engineer - Job Description

The Software Engineer is responsible for design and development activities for crafting software that is well written, functional, efficient, and clearly documented while exceeding the stated requirements. A key element of this role is working in a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) environment that involves large amounts of data in spatial/relational databases. Focus will be on expanding and maintaining Java and Python based tools, utilizing open source GIS software and rapid prototyping techniques to develop new product concepts. This position will report to the Director of Engineering.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Increase our production capacity and product offerings through the development of software tools and automated processes that are professional-grade, robust and ready for deployment
  • Design, write, test, debug, clearly document and release software in support of project objectives
  • Meet established deadlines while releasing software of the highest quality
  • Analyze system requirements, conduct feasibility studies and advise alternative approaches
  • Propose technical solutions to customer problems
  • Work effectively on both independent and collaborative projects
  • Provide nimble, rapid-prototyping for custom projects and new product ideas
  • Identify and recommend opportunities for process improvements and efficiencies
  • Seamlessly incorporate new designs and systems into existing processes
  • Must be able to manage time well, achieve objectives, communicate clearly, continually balance changing priorities and thrive in a fast-paced small team environment

Education/Experience

  • Education: BS/BA in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Geography or a related field
    • Three years or more of GIS-related software development experience
  • Proven history of technical competence through consistent on time deployment of effective software solutions directly addressing real business requirements

Compensation Structure
