Recovery by Neighborhood FAQ

Why post a mashup of recovery data over neighborhoods?

For years, Maponics has recognized the economic, social, and cultural importance of neighborhoods and now has defined boundaries for nearly 130,000 of them across the US. So, while the official recovery.gov web site is great for showing how money and jobs related to the Recovery Act have been distributed by ZIP Code but we know from experience that neighborhoods can be a more meaningful way to view this kind of data because they are culturally defined where as ZIP Codes are areas used to facilitate delivery of the mail.

Where do you get the recovery data?

We download data directly from the public recovery.gov web site.

What recovery dataset do you use?

We use the recipient-reported dataset (versus the agency-reported dataset).

How current is the recovery data?

The current mashup shows data from the recipient-reported data as of 6/17/10.

How do you match recovery data to Maponics Neighborhoods?

We geocode the location of each recipient location (the place of performance) and spatially compare and match to our neighborhood boundaries.

What geographic areas are covered?

We match all US recovery data (see our Methodology document for more information) to Maponics Neighborhoods in 10 US metros.
